How to Make the Most of Your Virtual Job Fair Visit

A virtual job fair is just like a traditional one. But just because they’re held in your living room doesn’t mean you should walk in with zero preparation. Here’s what you can do to nail that first impression — before, during, and after each virtual job fair.

  • Find out which employers are attending: It’s not a good idea to walk in unprepared. So, take some time to research the participating organizations and make a list of questions you’ll want to ask.
  • Dress to impress: Choose presentable, formal attire. Just because you’ll interact with your potential employers over Zoom or any other platform doesn’t mean you should dress casually. Ditch the sweats and T-shirt and dress like you would for an in-person job fair.
  • Prepare your resume: You need an up-to-date, polished resume for an optimal first impression. Upload it on the platform, if possible, so that it is accessible to employers you meet at the virtual job fair. The same goes for your work portfolio and LinkedIn profile.
  • Do a tech run-through: Technology can cheat you sometimes. So, doing a test run of all your equipment can ensure nothing gets in the way of your big day. Check whether your device can support the virtual job fair platform. Make sure your internet isn’t slow, as it can make your video or audio choppy. You should also use headphones if you cannot attend the fair from a quiet location.
  • Arrive on time: It’s highly crucial to show up at your selected session on time. This sends a message to recruiters that you’re taking the job fair seriously. Plus, it signals that you are dependable and respectful of their time.
  • Send a thank you the next day: You’ll want to nurture the connections you made at the career fair. So, thank them for their time via an email, phone call, or hand-written note. This refreshes the memory of the recruiters and reminds them how promising you are and the skills and experience you bring to the table.

The future of recruiting is virtual. It widens your horizons beyond the national boundaries and enables you to reach out to employers from around the world. So, the next time you want to look for upcoming virtual job fairs in the US, we hope our list comes in handy.
